Who we are

James Byler has always believed that the most compelling stories aren't told in wide angles, but in the small, weathered details that most people walk past. The Urban Archive Co. is a photography project exploring the many facets of life through images and the fascination with how things are made—and how they age.

I study textures. My work is a celebration of geometry, patina, and permanence. I find as much beauty in the cold, hard lines of a steel beam as I do in the delicate weight of antique silverware. To me, the world is a massive, intricate mosaic of materials—glass, metal, stone, and light—and my camera is the tool I use to isolate those pieces and reveal their hidden elegance.

The Aesthetic

My portfolio is a study of contrasts. You will find the grit of the industrial age sitting comfortably alongside the grace of classical architecture. Through high-contrast compositions and a focus on tactile reality, I create images that you can almost feel with your fingertips.
